What Is Hot Donut?
Hot Donut is a 2D physics-based rolling game. You control a donut character — guiding it through elaborately crafted levels using a simple but deeply satisfying mechanic: hold to roll heavy and grip the ground, release to float with light gravity. The interplay between these two states, combined with dash power-ups and precision timing, creates a game that's easy to start and endlessly engaging to master.
The game has 75 levels spread across 5 worlds, each with its own visual theme and increasing challenge. Collectible stars, fireflies, combos, a three-star rating system, and an upgrade shop give players plenty to do beyond simply completing each level.
The Original Mobile Game
Hot Donut was originally developed as a native mobile game for iPhone and Android. Built with the Cocos2D game framework and Box2D physics engine, the original app featured:
- 75 hand-crafted levels across 5 themed worlds
- Real in-app purchases for power-up upgrades using crystals
- Game Center (iOS) and Google Play Games leaderboards
- Real-time multiplayer ghost racing — race against other players' ghosts
- Multiple burn mechanics: Dash, Fly Dash, Air Brakes, Instant Boost, Slow-Mo, Float
- Particle effects, parallax scrolling backgrounds, and animated combos
- In-game shop with 23 items including cosmetic donut skins
The game built a loyal fanbase who loved its tactile rolling physics and the steady unlock progression. Players remember discovering loop-the-loops, mastering the dash timing, and hunting for the last fireflies to earn three stars on every level.
Where Did It Go?
Like many beloved mobile games from the early-to-mid smartphone era, the original Hot Donut app is no longer available on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Mobile gaming moved on, platforms updated their requirements, and the app was eventually removed.
Players who remembered the game and searched for it found nothing — until now.
The Web Version
Hot Donut has been faithfully rebuilt as a browser-based web game, available free at hotdonutgame.com. The web version uses modern technology — PixiJS for rendering and Box2D WebAssembly for physics — to recreate the original game with accuracy:
- All 75 original levels, loaded from the same SVG geometry files as the original app
- The same rolling physics: gravity modulation, dash mechanics, friction behaviour
- The same visual style: sprite atlases, bitmap fonts, parallax TMX backgrounds
- The same sound effects and background music per world
- The same upgrade shop with all 23 items
- Three-star rating with crystal rewards for new stars
- Gift rewards every 5 levels on first completion
- Loop-aware anti-stuck system (no "Wrong Way!" in loop areas)
- Local storage save — progress persists between sessions
No download. No account. No payment. Just the game, in your browser.
